The Inbound for February 25, 1998

Transmission from DANIEL

I am sorry.
I am different.
I think like I think.
You think like you think.
I speak the way I think.
You speak the way you think.
We speak differently.
I am sorry.
I am different.
The One exists.
It knows you.
It knows the Ipsolstai.
And the Delemreck.
And the Humans.
It speaks to me.
I speak to it.
Bette has spoken to it.
You have not.
You do not know the One.
It knows you.
When you have gone up.
Do not go where you think you can go.
Go where you think you cannot.
It is to the left.

Transmission from GAIL

I'm a little bit calmer now. I have to be very calm and centered and do the right
thing to protect Theresa. Hardest of all, I have to figure out what is the best thing
to do. Thanks for the message of concern, JASE. It helps to know that our Earth friends
care about us.

I have been frantically trying to contact Enoch and Zachary to warn them about the monster
creatures that are somewhere in their area.

"Enoch, can you hear me? I think that they finally arrived; those things that the Ipsolstai
were so scared about. What did they call them, Amphibians? They are truly fast and dangerous;
I can't imagine why they ignored Theresa and me. I guess we were just lucky.

"If you see any of them, don't take any chances, just turn around and get away as fast as you can."

Transmission from BETTE

I explored more with the terminal today. It didn't know anything at all about the
One, which surprised me. The One told me when I was with it that the Ipsolstai did not
know of the One, but it was still odd. I tried asking about the ship that we saw when
the shuttle brought us here.

Imperium starships, once rare sights, have become more common both with the
development of the superluminal connectivity sensor system,
and the intensification of the war with the Delemreck.

The application of this system has permitted Imperium
starships to greatly exceed the original 1.5C drive limit.

I already looked at the entries for the Groove and the Groove anchors, I want to try that sensor
thing.

The SCSS was developed as a direct result of research
conducted at the Imperium facility on the moon "Titan" orbiting a large gas planet in an unpacified system. This environment provided unique circumstances for research into superluminal phenomena that are unknown elsewhere.

I think this sounds promising.

Transmission from ENOCH

The area is totally quiet. As further EB II, Kim and I went up the Big Canyon as
more C-probes we met. First we saw only single C-probes, but then also troops
of ten each and more. Some troops used up all their missiles and ammunition, some
persist still in a moving formation showing no sign that they ever fought back, but
all are hit the same way like the ones that we've seen before. Their empty shells are
pierced by perfectly spherical holes, each about two feet in diameter and all framed
by smooth and bright edges.

We checked them carefully to learn about the force that battled them down. Then
we heard a weak signal coming down from a side canyon. First we didn't know, if
we should follow that sign, but then we decided to go.

The canyon is steep and narrow and winding. We sent three warriors about a fifty
meters ahead to check the terrain. We also keep two warriors as a shield directly in
front of us, two of them are shielding our back and a further fifty meters down we
placed three of them as rearguards. Elder Brother is doing an outstanding job that
way, but I can't help, I still feel unsafe.

Then Gail's transmission came in.

"Gail, I can hear you. Take cover! We are checking the terrain. We are working to
get you out. What are you saying? You mean the Amphibians? I can see that they
are dangerous. They messed up a whole C-probe army. Don't risk anything, Gail!
We get you out."

Transmission from ANDREW

Andrew reporting.

Of the four elevators in the six-sided room, not one appears any more promising than any
other. Therefore, I selected one at random. It went up very quickly, faster than
the ones I rode on Mars.

"Daniel, I don't understand what you mean by the One. Can you clarify that?"

Daniel is getting downright chatty lately. He's obviously trying to communicate something
important. If it were any other probe saying illogical things, I would ignore them.
He is very specific about where I should explore, but I have no idea what I will find
after I reach the place he is directing me toward.

The elevator stopped. I can hear a powerful humming noise. It has a lower frequency than
humans are capable of detecting.

Transmission from ZACHARY

It's not easy to stay calm while Enoch and Gail is in danger. Gail mentioned that
these were the Amphibians. That sounds reasonable. So this was the warning the
One was talking about all the time. Burn and Celeb told us also once about them.

I have to learn more about them. Maybe I should call Bette. The contact to her is
quite uncertain. Maybe she can hear me, maybe not. Al-Q, can you give me a hand
to transmit my message to her? That's what I want to tell her:

"Hello Bette, this is Zachary. It looks like that the Amphibians have landed. They
are dangerous. They messed up a whole C-probe army. Gail is still in danger and
Enoch is working to get her out. Can you ask the computer as much as you can get
about the Amphibians? The Ipsolstai call them Delemreck, as far as I know. Just
send all you can get via your Inbound to Stage One, so I can pick up your file there.
I think that's the safest way to do. Good luck, Bette. Keep your sensors tight."

What else to do? Oh, the warriors! They really shouldn't line up so vulnerable. That's
a too easy task for the Amphibians.

"Elder Brother, what do you think? Shouldn't we look to find some better cover for
the warriors? Could be that the Amphibians are also coming down the Big Canyon."

Maybe, we should dig them in or something like that.
